The past week has been painful to watch, discuss, and reckon with. I found it hard to pull my head up from my social feed long enough to write anything worthy of your attention. Summoning a post about music felt empty, given the suffering in Israel, Gaza, and too many other places to count.
But I also promised you (and myself) that I’d show up here consistently. As an answer to my call for ideas, several readers wanted to see more of our covers in all their digital glory. Here are a few October issue covers from the archive to kick things off. I’ll unlock more in the coming weeks, so make sure you’re subscribed.
Meanwhile, my friends at
got me on Zoom a few weeks back to ask me about the URB Archive project, life on Substack, and the future of content. While the full video interview is available only for their paying subscribers, there’s a tease here. A thoughtful overview of the topics can be found here. Thanks to Josh and Chris for including me.I forget how much I enjoy discussing media and my role as creator/curator/archivist. Especially when really smart people ask the questions. I also love asking questions, so I plan to host some conversations with special guests right here. Stay tuned.
Check out my interview in The Cadence here.

“I'm trying to come up with parallels that both celebrate something that happened 30 years ago and try to imply at least the connection to something that's going on today,” Roker says about URB 2.0. (The Cadence)
Well, you did it. In my September 29th post, I told you I wanted to hit 1,000 Substack subscribers in October, and we made it. Truly, the number isn’t the thing, but it’s a nice way to cap the first six months of this experiment. According to First 1000, it means that there’s enough of you to keep me moving. Thank you so much, and let’s get the next 1,000!
